"Exact Match Business Name" is the Sh*t These Days!

I am just appalled at this Google Local Business Pack result for the key phrase: "seo expert philippines".

Check out the screen grab below:

What did you notice from the 3-pack listing showing generic business names with exact or related match results for the key phrase "seo expert philippines"?

Still not convinced? Check out this Case Study link from Moz.com:

<a href="https://moz.com/ugc/case-study-the-interconnectedness-of-local-seo-and-exact-match-domains?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_content=interconnectedness_local_seo_exact_match_domains&utm_campaign=youmoz" style="font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.2em;">Case Study: The Interconnectedness of Local SEO and Exact Match Domains

The case study above just basically confirms what I have suspected all along. I know there are several signals that Google use for top rankings in the local business pack but "Exact Match Domains" (EMDs) should not be a major signal IMHO.

Google's search engine results should be better than this. I'm sure there are better SEO and Digital Marketing agencies that are way way more deserving than these generically-named businesses.

Does Google need another Pigeon update to sort things out? Or should I just keep on ranting and cursing under my own breath. =)

What are your thoughts about this?

Here's something to think about by SEO professionals and website owners. Check out this item from Google's Webmaster Guidelines:

"Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content."

Based on this guideline, a web page should have quality content in order to rank high in Google's search engine result pages. So by searching "seo expert philippines", I will expect a list of sites ranked by Google based on "quality content".

Using this knowledge, I searched "seo expert philippines" and then reviewed the search results. Scrolling down the first result page, I came across a Facebook
Page with the title "SEO Expert Philippines | Facebook".

Clicking on this link brought me to the "SEO Expert Philippines" Facebook Page.

It can be observed that the page has 10 likes
but zero content besides the obvious "SEO Expert Philippines" text. So
basically, Google ranked this page probably by the Title, URL keywords,
and H2 ("SEO Expert Philippines") text.

Going back to the guideline "Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.", we can see that this page doesn't satisfy the "useful, information-rich site" requirement.

I don't see any usefulness of this page. There's no information, no content, nothing that makes it stand out and earn the first page ranking for the Google search key phrase "seo expert philippines".

Now, tell me what you think about this thru the comments section. Any idea how this thing happened? I am open to your suggestions.

Tips for Google Places for Business Optimization

1. Make sure your Google Places for Business listing is complete.

There are more than 20 different fields you in your Google Places listing and surprisingly most businesses don’t bother to fill them all in. Don't forget to add pictures of your business and link to YouTube videos as part of your listing. Sometimes having a photo or video more than your competitor's listing is all it takes to rank higher.

2. Make sure you have client reviews in your Google+ Page(s).

Google+ User Review

Encourage your clients to write a review on your business' Google+ Page. Sometimes, the business with the most reviews can rank higher than the business competitors. Be sure that you'll be aware of your reviews whenever someone post reviews and comments on your page, positive or negative. Utilize Google Alerts to notify you of this event.

Respond immediately to negative reviews / comments by reaching out to your unsatisfied customer and seeing if you can reach out and explain your side and persuade the customer to withdraw the bad review.

3. Make sure that you'll use the best keywords in your listing's Categories section

Choose the most appropriate categories for your business / service. Pick a category from the predefined suggestions of Google to help it show your business for the right searches. You can always enter your own category if you can't see it in the predefined list. Make sure that you avoid using location-specific keywords (for example: london, manila, davao) as part of your category names. This can alert Google that you are "gaming" the system. Just define the exact business type or service that you offer.

Don't be afraid to define specific categories instead of generic ones. The important thing is that the categories describe your business exactly. Google's algorithm makes sure that users searching for "cafes" will see businesses in more specific categories like "internet cafes", "gourmet cafes", and "sidewalk cafes" too.

4. Use only one Google Places Listing if you have several service areas

Google Places for Business Service AreasSection

The Google Places Guidelines state that

"A business owner may add service areas to a new or existing listing if his business model requires him or an authorized representative of his business to travel to his customer's location. Some examples include: a restaurant that offers delivery to your door, a dog-walking business that picks up your pet from your home, or an in-home maid service."

Businesses that operate in a service area should not create a listing for every city they service.
Businesses that operate in a service area should only create one listing for
the central office or location and designate service areas for each city that they service.

5. Get listed in the other top local directories like:

Yelp

Bing

Yahoo Local

Best of the Web

Hotfrog

Foursquare

Yahoo Local

Get your business listed in the most popular local online directories. If you have a restaurant, nightlife, or hotel business, don't forget to use Zagat.com. Zagat's service is integrated to Google+ Local which is a part of Google Plus' core services.

What are Microformats?

Microformats, according to Microformats.org, are a set of
simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted
standards. Instead of throwing away what works today, microformats intend to solve
simpler problems first by adapting to current behaviors and usage
patterns (e.g. XHTML, blogging).

Rich Snippets

What are Rich Snippets?

Rich Snippets, according to Google, are detailed information intended to help users with specific
queries. For example, the snippet for a restaurant might show the
average review and price range; the snippet for a recipe page might show
the total preparation time, a photo, and the recipe’s review rating;
and the snippet for a music album could list songs along with a link to
play each song. These rich snippets help users recognize when your site
is relevant to their search, and may result in more clicks to your
pages.

OK that's enough geekspeak. =)

How can Microformats help in SEO? If you are not familiar with Rich Snippets, Google designed Rich Snippets to summarize the content of a page in a way
that makes it even easier for users to understand what the page is about. Rich Snippets are available in Google Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).

Rich Snippets - Reviews

The example above shows a rich snippet for a hotel review. The snippet brings attention to the site whenever it's listed in the Google's search results. If you compare it with other site listings, user's attention is brought to the site stands out because of the stars and high ratings.

Google Search Results

The Rich Snippets gives more detailed information about a site and provides higher click-thru rates according to studies.

So how are these Rich Snippets implemented?

Microformat will be the your next best friend. Microformats are simple codes that you can use to identify specific kinds of data, like products, people or events, in your web pages.

Google currently only supports six (6) major Microformat types. These are:

hcard – Marking up business card / profile info

hReview – Individual user reviews

hReview-aggregate – A summary of hReviews

hProduct – Marking up products, prices, and all product-related things

hCalendar – Event dates and appointments

hRecipe – Marking up recipes and their ingredients

hCard

<dfn style="font-style: normal;">hCard</dfn> is a simple, open format for publishing people, companies, organizations on the web.
Microformats may not improve your site's keyword rankings but by adding these markups you improve your site's click-thru rates which indirectly informs your site's importance to Google. More click-thrus means more prospects which could ultimately lead to more sales.
Website PageRank (PR) values were updated on the 7th of November 2012. Again quality content and backlinks helped in earning higher PageRank values. My website's PageRank gained one point from a lowly zero PR.

My blogsite URL is relatively new because I created a new Blogger URL for it. I removed the extra hyphens that might signal Google that I have a spam site and also to avoid the Exact Match Domain (EMD) update of Google. A website sporting a shorter URL will also make its name easier to recall. Hopefully these changes will also improve my site's keyword rankings.

When preparing new articles / posts, make sure you have informative and original content. Create outbound links that point to high PR websites. Also you need to add the [rel="nofollow"] attributes to the outbound hyperlink tags to avoid leaking PR to another website's page. Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these type of links.

When creating backlinks, prioritize links from high quality, high PR, and authoritative sites. Avoid low PR directories and websites that have unrelated content. Don't forget to build backlinks from Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, PInterest, and Google+. Social Media sites help in driving traffic to your own website(s).

Just follow my tips and slowly but surely, your sites will gain higher PR values.

Google Meta Tags "news_keyword"

About a decade ago, the "Keywords" meta tags of web pages were often abused by webmasters and website owners. They stuffed these pages with often-irrelevant keywords and these keywords were hidden from view of the website visitors. Because of this abuse by keyword spammers, Google disregarded the "Keywords" meta tag as one of the keyword ranking factors. Over time, less and less weight was given to the "Keywords" meta tags, and more and more weight was given to the actual content. Some engines still do index the keywords within these meta tags, but only as a minor supplement and as tags to the text in the body copy and title tags of web pages.

Although Google and some of the major search engines have long forgotten the"Keywords" Meta Tag because of keyword spamming, Google has advised just recently about a Google-specific meta tag that would help determine how to best classify a web page's content.

If you want to ensure that your site comes up in Google Search for a particular keyword, your article should "naturally" contain words, names, and figures that are central to a particular article or news story. If you create an information-rich site that clearly and accurately describes your topic, you will improve your chances of appearing in Google search results for relevant searches.

By using the Google Meta Tag "news_keywords", you can specify which keywords are most relevant to your articles or news stories. For example, in an article about "airport taxis", you could add the following code to help Google News better understand the specific nature of your article's content:

Only commas are allowed as punctuations between keywords. You can add up to ten phrases for a given news story or article. All of these keywords are given equal value by Google, meaning the first keyword is not considered a stronger signal than the last or tenth keyword.

Hope you learned something about the Google "news_keywords" Meta Tag and apply this new knowledge to your website(s).

Display Profile Photo in Google Search Results

Another feature that came with Google+ was the rel="author" markup. Implementing this feature gives neat results on your blog listings on Google search engine result pages (SERPs) since your Google+ profile photo will be displayed alongside your blog listings in Google search.

Google Rel="Author" Implementation Sample

Only a few blog writers have implemented this feature and are not aware of its importance for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with regards to trustworthiness and authority.

Implementing the rel=”author” feature requires three links:

A link from your blog post to your author page (About Me) using rel=”author”

A link from your author page (About Me) to your Google profile page using rel=”me”

A link from your Google+ profile page to your author page (About Me)

Here's a visual guide on how to implement this feature:

Link from Blog Post to An Author PAge

Create a link from your blog post to an author page on the same domain. This tells Google about the authorship of the posts /articles on that domain. You can use the root domain as the author page if it has a link to your Google profile using rel=”me” as a link attribute and if it is not hosted on a free blogging platform such as Blogspot.com or WordPress.com.

A blog with multiple authors will have multiple author pages. Each post by each author has a link that points to their own author page using rel=”author” but the author page does NOT have to be an actual author page. For individuals, a link to the author's About page is enough.

For Blogger:

Go to Design then Edit HTML

Click on "Expand Widget Templates"

Locate the "post-footer" section

Locate "authorlabel<data:post .author=".author">".</data:post>

Use the URL of your About Me page in the tag block. I used my Blogger Profile URL.

Ex.
<data:post .author=".author"></data:post>

For WordPress:

Go to Appearance then Editor

Edit the "Single Post" file

Locate the "byline" section

Update the URL

Link from an Author page (About Me) to a Google profile page using rel=”me”

The second link is from the author page to the Google profile page. This link tells Google that the author of that domain is the same person as the one in the Google profile. You’re essentially claiming that Google profile as your own, which is why you use rel=”me” on this link.

The best practice is to link to the base URL of your Google profile.

https://plus.google.com/115106448444522478339

This might be a bit confusing because the base URL will default to a /posts suffix. It is further complicated by the implementation of Google+ which changes the subdomain from profiles to plus.

Don’t worry. If you’re not using Google+ yet use your current Google profile URL. Google will put in the proper 301 redirect from the old profile to the new once you’re using Google+.

A link from your Google+ profile page to your author page (About Me)

Add a reciprocal link back from your profile to the site(s) you just updated.

Edit the Contributor To section.

In the dialog that appears, click Add custom link, and then enter the website URL.

If you want, click the drop-down list to specify who can see the link.

Click Save.

Google Plus - Contributor To Section

Google's Over-optimization Penalty

Google recently announced the impending launch of their new "Over-optimization" penalty for websites. This penalty will ensure that Google's results will not only be relevant but the listed sites will have great and unique content.

Search engine optimization (SEO) has become highly competitive and some SEO professionals and webmasters have been overdoing their websites' optimization. Sites with poor content but over-optimized are easy to spot. Keywords stuffed in their websites' Title, Meta Description text, Meta Keyword text, and body content are what I'd call "over the top". For example, I saw an Indian Web Development company website with a Title that is like a kilometer long or something. =)

Even checking the footer links becomes a dead giveaway. I've seen a lot of corporate SEO sites with footer links that linked internally or to the home page using questionable links. An example is a site with the text "SEO Asia", "SEO China", "SEO Philippines", "SEO Vietnam", etc. but actually it's an Indian SEO company.

Others buy a lot of keyword-relevant URLs and redirect all of these URLS to one single website.

Jeez... I hope your sites are not one of these questionable sites.

Anyway here's my short list of tips on how not to "over-optimize" for Google:

Avoid keyword stuffing - Use a short and content relevant Title text with about 70 characters or less. Your website's Meta Description text should be readable to a human and is formed in complete sentences. Your web page's body content should have about 3% to 7% keyword density to be on the safe side.

Don't use duplicate content - Content on your site's pages should be unique. Don't create similar pages on the same site or don't link to a site with similar content. Check for duplicate content on other sites using an online checking tool. If you notice that another site has copied your content or worst copied your whole website (Happened to me before!), report this duplicate content issue to Google immediately.

Don't use hidden text and/or doorway pages - Some sites employ these "black hat" techniques thinking that they can escape Google's ranking algorithm. Your site might escape Google but can you escape this? Google Webspam Report

Don't highlight all keywords with Bold or Strong tags - Use Bold or Strong tags only on important keywords but use it only on every unique occurrence. Don't highlight every keyword or key phrase.

Stay away from the "Dark Side" - This is a no-brainer. Why would you try to trick Google into ranking your site highly thru "black hat" methods? The long-term penalty on your website far outweighs the benefits of short-term keyword rankings.

Finally, just continue on publishing quality content and follow Google's Webmaster Guidelines and Google will notice your site and rank it accordingly.Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4865533170649748311.post-29842317627502005702012-02-08T17:46:00.001+08:002012-02-08T17:57:22.403+08:00February 2012 Google PageRank Update!I noticed my website's Google Toolbar PR changed today. It's been about three months since the last PR update. Check it out, some website PRs were updated February 7, 2012. This
blogsite's PR2 improved to PR3.

Google might still be updating website
PageRanks, wait for a week or so for PRs to stabilize.Improve your Google PageRank by linking to high PR sites. The quality of your website's backlinks is a primary factor that determines PR.

A high Google PageRank doesn't mean better traffic. You have to earn traffic thru marketing and organic search engine optimization. SEO will improve keyword rankings and will ultimately gain traffic for websites thru top page listings.
Google is still the top search engine so we will use its statistical tools in performing keyword research.

Google has three search volume analysis tools namely:

Google Adword: Keyword Tool

Google Insights for Search

Google Trends

Google Adword: Keyword Tool

The Google Adword: Keyword Tool is a vital tool for keyword research. You can get the global and local search volumes for keyword ideas. This is helpful in determining what keyword ideas have high, medium, and low search volumes and its relative level of competition.

You can search for keyword ideas by entering a keyword related to your
business or service or a URL to a page containing content related to
your business or service. Or, you can go straight to filtering keyword
categories.

There are different settings for generating results. The most important ones for SEO are listed below.

Option Settings:

Match Type:
- Select this option to see only results that include your original search terms. All closely related terms will be listed. Disable this if you want more keyword ideas instead of a more targeted listing.

Advanced Options:
Locations and Languages

Google Insights for Search

With Google Insights for Search, you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties. You can compare up to five search terms or groupings at one time, with up to 25 search terms in each grouping (use the plus sign to create a grouping). Click + Add search term to add a search term or a grouping; to remove a search term, click the x next to it.

You can choose which parameter you want to focus on by selecting the appropriate radio button next to the corresponding search box. For instance, if you want to compare two locations, select the radio button next to Locations. You can compare up to five locations by clicking + Add another. Click the x next to a location to dismiss it. Then, click Search. Similarly, if you want to compare different time frames, select the radio button next to Time ranges.

Google Trends

Google Trends shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. Google Trends also allows the user to compare the volume of searches
between two or more terms. An additional feature of Google Trends is in
its ability to show news related to the search-term overlaid on the
chart, showing how new events affect search popularity.

Use these three Google tools in performing your keyword research especially for generating Google Places-targeted keyword ideas. These tools will help you create a keyword list by region for your local search-targeted campaigns.

After you have prepared your keyword list, you can then start building your website and/or Google Places listing SEO strategies.

Ever notice that the Google Web Search returns results from its relevant indexed images especially if the search keyword is a popular name, product, or celebrity?

Here are my Top Five Tips for Image Search Optimization:

Use Target Keywords for Filenames

Follow File Naming Conventions

Don't Forget The IMG Tag Alt Attributes

Use Image Captions

Use Social Media Sites

Use Target Keywords for Filenames

First, you need to determine your target keywords. What are your focus keywords? You need to perform a keyword research by yourself or hire a professional like an SEO Expert to help you.

The target keywords should be integrated to the image filenames. Make sure that the names are short, descriptive, and not spammy or Google will notice it.

Follow File Naming Conventions

Website owners usually upload images from their picture folders loaded
with images from digital cameras. These pictures are usually named sequentially by
the camera software (e.g. IMG_0001.JPG). These default names won't help
your optimization at all.

You need to rename these files manually to provide more relevant names for each image. For compound names, it is recommended to use hyphens ("-") as word separators.

For example:

ferrari-logo1.jpg

apples-red-and-green.jpg

steve-jobs-apple.jpg

Don't Forget The IMG Tag Alt Text

I've seen a lot of website owners and webmasters fail to include the "Alt" attribute text on their websites' IMG tags. The "Alt" text is used by Google and other search engines for indexing images. The "Alt" text on each image should be UNIQUE, short, descriptive, and not spammy.

Use Image Captions

Under each website image should be a keyword-rich caption that describes what the picture is all about. The captions help the search engines in determining the relevancy of the images to the target keywords or key phrases.

Use Social Media Sites

Don't forget the importance of Social Media sites. Use Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and other photo-sharing sites as part of your web visibility efforts. You can also share the images on top social bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit. The more varied the websites that host your images, the more Google will give value to these images.

The keyword rankings of these images may take from two to three months to reach the first page on Google's Image Search results. This will depend mostly on your competitors and your image optimization efforts.

Hope you learned something.
Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4865533170649748311.post-19886426103311242802011-11-08T19:42:00.000+08:002013-01-05T15:51:56.167+08:00Google PageRank Update November 2011Google PageRank has updated again and my SEO blog's PR score downgraded to 2. I also noticed the PageRank scores downgraded on my other blogs. Hopefully, this could just be temporary and Google will tweak their PageRank scoring algorithm again.
New articles or new website pages are favored by Google because these pages bring the most up-to-date info. If you want to bring in more traffic to your site, always plan to add new content as often as possible.

Here are some of my tricks in shouting out to Google that my blog is ready for re-indexing:

1. Blog and Ping

Blogsites are designed to allow you to easily add material to your site quickly and as frequently as you'd like. Pinging notifies a number of web services that keep track of blogs and
publish them. By pinging, you let the services know that your blog has
been updated.

I usually use the ping services of these websites:

http://www.bulkping.com

http://pingomatic.com

http://feedshark.brainbliss.com

Pinging tools are very simple to use. Just enter the URL of the specific page with the new content you want to be found and the ping tool will alert sites like Google Blog Search, Syndic8, Weblogs.com and others that you have new content ready to share with the world.

2. Status Updates

Post your new article/page's URL with the accompanying keyword-rich text on Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other micro-blogging sites.

The Googlebot crawls a high PageRank (PR) website more often. If you are a blogger or webmaster
who update your website frequently, your site's newly added content and
links will greatly benefit from the Googlebot's priority crawling.

Posting your new article/page URL on a high PR and authority site like Facebook helps your
fresh content and links to be shown faster in the search engine because of indirect indexing.

I hope you learned a thing or two from this post. =)
New "signals" were incorporated to Google's ranking algorithm every time there is a Panda update in order to differentiate high quality sites from low quality sites. For anyone who was hit by Google's Panda update, it is particularly important to know and understand that website changes won't have immediate effects on your site's keyword rankings.

Awwwww...The Google Panda updates should be as cute as this pic.

Since the Google Panda update is run from time-to-time, if you have improved your site's content after a previously run Panda update then there's a big chance that your keyword rankings will improve too. You have something like 4-6 weeks as a window of opportunity for your site's content improvement before the next Google Panda update.

Take note that Google makes small algorithm changes all the time independently from the Panda updates. Don't blame the Google Panda updates if your site's keyword rankings are poor. You just have to improve your site's content quality in order to show Google and ultimately the rest of the major search engines that your site is informative and has value.

So QUIT blaming the Panda!

Last month, Google announced extended sitelinks. The maximum number of sitelinks of websites increased from eight (8) to twelve (12). Extended Sitelinks are new additions to the search results pages of Google. Sites of well known brands and companies like Facebook are those which are receiving the extended Sitelinks.

Facebook Sitelinks on Google

In general, Google shows sitelinks if it is sure that a website is the exact match for a search query but these sitelinks don't usually appear for two or more keyword searches. Product name or company name searches are usually given more value by Google's Sitelinks algorithm.

Google generates the sitelinks for your website based on the following:

website navigational structure

page names

page titles and Meta descriptions

click stream data of the most popular website pages

anchor text of the internal and external links that point to your website.

Google uses these important signals in determining the sitelinks to be generated.

If Google decides to display sitelinks for your website, your site's content will be more prominent than before and the major pages and their respective descriptions will be visible in Google's Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) .

The Google Toolbar will not be available for Firefox 5 or newer versions. The article about this update is published at http://www.google.com/support/toolbar/bin/answer.py?answer=1342452&topic=15356)

The Google Toolbar

The Google Toolbar offers helpful search suggestions as you type in the search box.
While most suggestions come from popular Google searches, you'll also
see suggestions from your Google bookmarks and your search history.
Toolbar even lets you know if you've incorrectly spelled a word, and
suggests the correct spelling.

For SEO, the Google Toolbar has the PageRank (PR) button to display a web page's PR value. This button displays the importance of the web page you're viewing. According to Google,
web pages with a higher PageRank are more likely to appear at the top of
Google search results.
Another Google Toolbar Pagerank Update?Wow! That was quick... check out your website's PageRank, I think there was another Google PR update last July 18, 2011. This blog's PR is back to PR3 from PR2.

I thought my site lost some PR points, I guess Google corrected this "mistake". Maybe Google miscalculated some site PageRanks and had to re-update them to the most accurate PR values. =)

Thank you Google!
Another Google PageRank update!!!Check out your website's Google PageRank. Google just updated site PRs. Some of my sites improved their PageRanks, while some downgraded. =(

I still have to check why this happened. Could this be because of the Google Panda Update? Maybe some of my backlinks have issues that need to be resolved or the sites my blogs linked to got penalized. Quality backlinks are important for good PageRanks.

Anyway, good luck guys! Hope you have improved your site's PRs.

Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4865533170649748311.post-83226614662409639342011-06-26T06:43:00.007+08:002011-06-26T06:49:53.364+08:00SEO Tip: Importance of Outbound Links and InlinkingOutbound links tell search engines which websites you think have valuable information and are relevant to your own website(s), and help your visitors find what they need even if these websites / web pages are not your own site(s).

One of the key elements of search engine optimization is links - not just inbound links to your website, but outbound links from your site to other websites.

When you link to other websites, you show search engines that you are trying to provide a good user experience for anyone who visits your website by sending them to other information sources you've judged to be valuable and relevant to your content. Because links are used by search engines in discovering new websites or web pages, you're also doing other websites a good favor.

You can also link to important pages on your website from your homepage. Inlinking signals to search engines which pages have information you think your readers or visitors will get more information. When you link to other pages in your website, you distribute link juice into your web pages. While this won't automatically shoot your pages into the No. 1 spot on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), linking to pages within your site will help search engines "see" the connection between your pages and the homepage.

Now go on and build me some links!Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4865533170649748311.post-45430617017983635062011-05-29T10:51:00.002+08:002011-05-29T12:31:46.700+08:00SEO Tip: Use Only One Google Places Listing If You Have Several Service Areas for a BusinessThe Google Places Guidelines state that

"A business owner may add service areas to a new or existing listing if his business model requires him or an authorized representative of his business to travel to his customer's location. Some examples include: a restaurant that offers delivery to your door, a dog-walking business that picks up your pet from your home, or an in-home maid service."

Not all local businesses serve their customers from a physical location. For example, some businesses operate from home while others are virtual, mobile, and have no central location. If a local business serves customers at their locations, it can list its service area on Google Places.

A service area is the area that a business is willing to serve. Google Places does not allow anyone to create more than one listing for each business location, either in a single account or multiple accounts.

Businesses that operate in a service area, as opposed to a single location, should not create a listing for every city they service. Businesses that operate in a service area should create one listing for the central office or location and designate service areas. All Google Places listings, including listings with service areas, require a valid physical address.

To set a service area for your listing, log into your account and edit the listing of your choice. On the Edit Business Listing page, look for the section with the header "Service Areas and Location Settings".

To set a service area, select 'Yes, this business serves customers at their locations in a specific area.' option. Once you select 'Yes,' a box will appear with additional options. If you'd like to make your address private, check the box next to 'Do not show my business address on my Maps listing.', then, select the areas your business serves.

Be sure to follow the Google Places Guidelines. Google is strict with these guidelines, and following these requirements will determine your listing or delisting from Google Places.Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4865533170649748311.post-58179696641028080482011-04-17T11:47:00.007+08:002011-05-06T17:26:53.549+08:00SEO Tip: How to Report Duplicate Content to GoogleAre you a victim of website duplication?

Well I am and I'm pissed as hell at this lazy SEO guy from Pakistan. He has six freaking years as an SEO specialist.Yeah right! This guy copied everything from my site including the Title text, articles, and web layout. Basically, he just copied my blogsite's content and added more text about his services and then proclaimed himself as the leading SEO freaking Specialist of Pakistan.

How do I deal with this scumbag? Well I reported him to Google and if no action was taken by Google after two weeks then I am gonna deal with him my way.

Here is the link on Google's Webmaster Tools for reporting site duplication thru the Spam Report page:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreport?hl=en&pli=1

Google Webmaster Tools - Spam Report

Fill in all the required fields and don't forget to check the "Duplicate site or pages" option. Google's action on the spam report might take two weeks or more. Just continue on checking your site and the copycat site's keyword rankings. If you see some improvement on that site's keyword rankings then refile your spam report.

Sorry for my rant by the way and have a nice day!
What is your website's keyword ranking after the Google Panda/Farmer Update?

Google updated their ranking algorithm last February 23rd in the USA and some site keyword rankings were affected. Here's a link from the Official Google Blog regarding this update:

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/finding-more-high-quality-sites-in.html

This Google algorithm update is pretty big in scope and affected about 11.8% of Google search queries and it affected the keyword rankings of low-quality sites. Sites with copied content, content scraped from other sites, low quality poorly-written content, shallow content, and sites with more ads than content were greatly affected. I hope your site is not one of these sites. =)

Review your site's content and make sure that you only publish useful content that is related to your website's target keywords. Give your website visitors the info that they need. Your site's design and usability is also important. Make sure that the web pages are easy to navigate and the overall user experience is above average.

This is a good improvement from Google and will surely be beneficial to all except the shady sites for sure.

The search results are not only based on the relevancy of each web page to the search term, but Google Personalized Search also takes into account what websites the user previously visited through search results to determine which search results to determine for future searches, to provide a more personalized experience.

This may work for personal use but the results are not the same for others. For example, clients from another country wants to check the keyword rankings of their websites and they then compare the results with your own search results. Chances are the results are slightly different due to the Google Personalized Search algorithm.

In order to manually disable the Google Personalized Search algorithm, try adding the text "&pws=0" to the URL in the address bar and reload the page. Check out the results. What you see are the actual Google search results without the effect of Google's Personalized Search algorithm.

Another workaround for this issue is to use a third party SEO tool like Mike's Marketing Tools - Search Engine Rankings Report, These SEO tools are simple and easy to use. The results of these tools are not affected by the Google Personalized Search algorithm.Roderick Allan Baylonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00139173505113329853noreply@blogger.com
